Remember to take a break.

When things go bad. When you feel down. When the motivation is low.

Take a break and direct your attention away from what is not working.

Learn something, instead of dedicating one more hour to the project that’s sucking your life away.

Chat with a stranger, instead of repeating the same things yet another time to the friend that is hurting you.

Grab a book, instead of checking your inbox once more waiting for the message that never comes.

You can always go back to the problem later on.

The end goal

Today, I write my blog post number 1,000.

1,000 days of writing every day. Almost three years since I have decided to give it another try.

And one thing has become more and more clear during this time. The end goal is the act of writing itself. It is not the views – for those, I am grateful. It is not the likes – by those, I am humbled. It is the sitting down in front of the screen every evening, no matter where I happen to be, no matter the kind of day I had, no matter whether I know what I will write about or not. It is the habit. It is the doing.

We need habits. And we need to go back to choosing the ones we dedicate time to.

Stay

There is value in staying with what makes you uncomfortable.

You get stronger, you understand more, you settle. Staying is a learning experience. It is by staying that eventually you begin to manage situations that initially seemed insurmountable.

Of course, staying is also a huge stress.

So pick a few things that matter, and stay.

More rounded

We think of most things as linear experiences.

That’s certainly true in business. The funnel is linear. The go-to-market process is linear. The sales pipeline is linear. The launch of a new product or service is linear. The very same metaphors we use to describe those things (funnel, pipeline, launch) are linear.

And yet, success requires that you circle back and iterate with the new information you have acquired. That you adjust the trajectory continuously with the help of what you are learning as you go.

It turns out that to be succesful in what matters we need to apply more rounded thinking.

Used to boredom

The positive consequence of getting used to boredom is that you allow time for things to happen.

You do not check every other day if something is happening, you do not ask for a new report, a new deadline, a new update, you do not seek daily rewards, you do not rush to change the inputs hoping for a faster outcome.

You have a plan and you stick to it.
