Getting far

If you’re a marketer and can only talk to marketers, you are not going to get far.

If you’re a salesman and can only talk to sales folks, you are not going to get far.

If you’re a developer and can only talk to developers, you will still have job security, but you are not going to get far.

If you’re a strategist and can only talk to business people, you are not going to get far.

Build networks instead, inside and outside of your turf. Learn to speak different languages and to talk to different people. Be a mediator and an initiator.

That’s when you are going to get far.

The lock and the key

First, you need to figure out what story you have to tell.

Second, you need to figure out who might be interested in the story you have to tell.

Third, you have to tell the story.

One and two might be interchangeable, and actually it is generally a good idea to search for a lock and then fashion a key.

But the problem is that most just go with three.

Expanding and contracting

What if you do not need an extra hour?

What if hiring a junior team member is not the best solution?

What if onboarding a new big customer is not what’s best for your people at this stage?

What if 30% growth is not sustainable for the type of company you want to build?

The point is not aiming to have more to achieve more. And the point is also not aiming to achieve more by having less. The point is aiming to achieve what make sense.

Over performing is not the best choice for most of us, because when we do that we take things away from other parts of our lives, from other people in our lives, from things that matter is life.

Connect the dots

Are the numbers you track the numbers that matter? Do they tell the story of a success, of your success, or of someone else’s success?

These days, measuring is very easy. You can track basically every progress, every little step, every achievement, every moment. But are those the numbers that take you in the direction you have chosen?

Sometimes we celebrate because we feel we are connecting the dots, but the final image was drawn by somebody else. Be mindful if that is the case.

A price too high

A big chunk of every job is managing expectations.

Of course, we want to say yes to everything. We want all the new customers and partners. We want to be perceived as competent, fast, and infallible. We want others to think that we do our work with ease even though our work is complex and uncertain. We want to project an aura of competence and confidence in any situation.

But if we do not manage expectations realistically, we will soon drown and take all those around us – colleagues, friends, family – with us.

The price is just too high.
