No shortcut

Once you have mastered the first ten numbers – from 0 to 9 – and understood the system that gets you to 19, it is quite easy to figure out how to count to 100, 1,000, 1,000,000.

This is true for many things. You need to put in the work in the beginning to learn the basics and understand the system, then things will get gradually easier as you do more of the same.

If you keep skipping the 7 when you count 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, all you can do is repeat until you get it right.

There is no shortcut.

Distance

This global crisis is taking lives, jobs, safety, certainty, and will continue to do so for months to come. The impact of it is unimaginable to all.

Yet, at some point it will end. And if you are brave enough to distance yourself from it today, you’ll get the chance to be ready for when that will happen.

Facade

This is an historical period that is completely out of the ordinary.

Exceptions are made, circumstances are raised, needs are shaped. Yet, we should be careful using all of this as an excuse to deviate from our path.

In most cases, we can still continue pursuing what we were pursuing before. The values, beliefs, rules we have set at the indivual level do not necessarily have to be questioned.

Unless of course those were just a convenient facade.

A good way to understand this is by counting how many times we say “considering the current circumstances” to excuse ourselves for what we are about to say and do. It could be telling.

Reciprocity

Ideally, relationships are established in good times.

It is more challenging to do that when the crisis hits, when everyone is occupied saving their neck, when nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. There’s a sense of individualism that grows in dire times, preventing the reciprocity needed to build and cultivate relationships.

The only thing that can be done now then, in this moment of unprecedented unknowns, is forget about the reciprocity and just give. Is there anything you own that could be useful out there? Do you have anything to say that could lift the spirit of those most distressed? Is the message you have to deliver looking at a positive future, or is it dilating stress and urgency beyond the here and now?

Marketers should be careful out there these days, the risk in terms of reputation is really high.

Fear

Fear means you care.

Fear means you will think twice.

Fear means long-term matters to you.

Fear means you are learning.

Fear means you are not alone.

Fear is good, and when you accept it in your life, name it, verbalize it, it is a lot less scary than you think.
